Housebuilder supports Type 1 Diabetes research
A leading East Wales housebuilder has teamed up with a charity to help find a cure for type 1 diabetes.
Llantrisant-based Persimmon Homes East Wales has backed JDRF with a £1,000 grant courtesy of its Community Champions scheme, which awards two charities and community groups in the region with donations of up to a grand each month.
JDRF leads medical research into type 1 diabetes, a lifelong condition that affects over 400,000 people in the UK.
The organisation funds research to help find a cure for the condition, while also funding research into treatments. With more research developments in the past five years than in the previous 30, JDRF is making great progress in its battle against the condition.
Lydia Warrilow, head of regional fundraising at JDRF, said: “We are so pleased to be recognised as a Community Champion by Persimmon Homes East Wales and the generous donation is sure to make a great difference.
“Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune condition which cannot be prevented, and is not caused by lifestyle.
“29,000 children are affected by type 1 diabetes. A child diagnosed at the age of five faces up to 19,000 injections and 50,000 finger prick blood tests by the time they are 18.
“We are committed to finding a cure and we know it is only a matter of time, money and great research.
“The Carten 100 cycle ride from Cardiff to Tenby is coming up in May too, which will help to raise further funds to support our cause.
Victoria Williams, sales director at Persimmon Homes East Wales, said: “We’re delighted to be able to make this donation to JDRF, a charity that plays such a vital role in the battle against type 1 diabetes.
“We’ve donated over £20,000 in 2016 and there’s more to come this year.
“Our Community Champion scheme gives us the chance to support groups, clubs and charities in the areas in which we are building and we would welcome any applications by visiting www.persimmonhomes.com/charity.”
