Craft beer venue celebrating East London heritage opens at London City Airport

Truman’s Brewery has launched a new cafe-bar at London City Airport showcasing the East London brewers selection of craft beers.

Brick Lane Brews, which opened this week, is housed within the airport departures area at the London Royal Docks airport, and marks another chapter in the resurgent brand after it was re-launched in 2010.

Serving up coffee, salt beef beigels and beers, the venue is the first venue to carry the Brick Lane Brew moniker, with the brewer hinting that more venues could be on the way.

James Morgan, who steered Truman’s relaunch, commented: “We are delighted to be bringing Truman’s to London City Airport. The team at London City have been excellent and we look forward to offering customers Truman’s beer, Brick Lane biegels and Union Roasted coffee all day long.”

The Truman’s name has a history dating back to the 1660s, stemming from a brewery located on what is now known as Brick Lane in East London.

Under the management of Benjamin Truman in the 18th Century, it grew to become one of the largest brewers in London while continued expansion of its brewing efforts and estate into the 19th Century saw it become the largest brewery in the world.

However, the advent of cheap lager and more adroit competitors in the 20th Century saw the brand’s appeal wane and eventually led to the brewery being shuttered in 1989, lying dormant until Morgan resurrected the brand in 2010 and began brewing again in 2013.

Describing the new venue as a ‘homage’ to East London’s food and drink scene, Morgan hinted that more sites could be on the way for the resurgent brand.

He added: “We are actively looking for more sites and are passionate about sharing the Brick Lane Brews experience with, not only London but the rest of the world …. and what better place to start that journey than at London City Airport.”
