A plan of the old mill site

Former Lancashire mill site set for new jobs and £16.5m residential transformation

A derelict spinning mill site in Lancashire is set to be transformed in a multi-million pound scheme that will create dozens of new homes and more than 60 jobs.

South Ribble Council gave the greenlight for Countryside Properties (UK) Ltd to turn the Bamber Bridge Spinning & Weaving Company Mill, located near Preston, into 188 homes.

The Manchester office of national planning, design and economics consultancy Nathaniel Lichfield & Partners (NLP) secured planning consent for the £16.5m project, which will create 63 direct jobs during the build phase.

Of 188 dwellings, will be designated as 18 affordable homes. The properties will comprise a mix of two, three and four bedrooms.

All will be two storey homes, although some will have an additional bedroom in the roof space.

Countryside’s land director, Ian Simpson, said: “Our aim is to transform this brownfield site with high quality homes that are both affordable and available for a wide range of people.

“We have developed a successful partnership model, working with registered social landlords, private rental sector specialist, Sigma and local communities to create vibrant, mixed tenure neighbourhoods.”

He continued: “We understand and appreciate the heritage of this site but also issues the local community has faced with a lack of progress on its redevelopment.

Our partnership model enables us to build quickly and our approach to place making will see the rapid emergence of an attractive development.“

Simon Pemberton, senior director at NLP, said: “We are delighted to have secured permission for this development on behalf of our client.

“It will transform this derelict site and help the council achieve its housing targets.”

Work on the scheme is due to begin later this year.

The former mill was demolished in early 2015, having lain unused since closing in 1959.
