Sue Garland Worthington as new Master for Marketors
Experienced tourism professional becomes Master at Clothworkers’ Hall Banquet
City of London, 27 January, 2017 - The Worshipful Company of Marketors, “The Marketors” new Master for 2017 is Sue Garland Worthington OBE. She was installed as Master at a special Ceremonial Court and Installation Banquet, held on January 24 at Clothworkers’ Hall, in the City of London.
Worthington is an experienced marketer with a long and distinguished career in government communications and the travel industry. After starting her profession at the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), she transitioned into the travel industry and worked for the English Tourist Board, before taking on the role of deputy and acting CEO at the British Tourist Authority (BTA), now known as VisitBritain.
Since leaving the BTA in 2002, Worthington has undertaken numerous independent consultancy assignments focused on change management, as well as tourism. She is currently non-executive director of the Continuum Group — the company responsible for popular UK attractions such as Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower, Edinburgh’s Mary King’s Close and York’s Chocolate Story.
Worthington joined The Worshipful Company of Marketors in 2003, before becoming a Liveryman in 2004 and a court assistant in 2009. She is also a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, the Royal Society of Arts and the Tourism Society, and was awarded an OBE for Services to Tourism in the 2001 Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Worthington says: “I can’t describe how privileged I feel to have been elected Master for 2017. The theme I’ve chosen for this year is ‘Great Britain – Great Brand’, which I chose to reflect not only my background in tourism but also the importance of Britain’s key brand values in the wider export scenario — values such as continuity, an incorrupt legal system, diversity and inclusion. Brexit has given this added relevance as some of these values are now being tested.”
