Derelict Newcastle city centre building to transform into 26-storey housing scheme
A Newcastle city centre building which has stood vacant for 12 years is set to be regenerated as a housing project, following planning approval.
A derelict former warehouse building, the 26-storey scheme on Rutherford Street will be turned into 96 one bedroom apartments and 66 two bedroom apartments.
Fronting St James’ Boulevard, the property will be built exclusively for the residential rental market with graduates and young professionals expected to be the site’s key suitors.
Andrew Rennie, Managing Director of Citygrove, the project promoter, said: “We welcome the planning committee’s decision to approve this landmark building, which will give a new lease of life to a derelict brownfield site in the city centre.
“We are grateful for the support the application has received and look forward to construction works commencing.”
