Tissue maker backs local food bank
SCA’s Prudhoe mill, which manufactures the popular Velvet brand of toilet tissue, has made another bulk donation of hundreds of toilet rolls and tissue products to help The West Northumberland Food Bank in Hexham.
This is the second time SCA has supported the independent charity, which provides a safety net for individuals and families in villages and towns throughout the area by providing emergency food supplies to people in crisis.
The charity was set up in 2013 in direct response to support agencies across West Northumberland reporting an increased demand from individuals and families struggling to put food on the table. During the last 12 months it has distributed over 2,100 food bags.
Food bank co-ordinator, Sam Gilchrist, said: “So often people in hardship have nowhere else to turn for support and most people who come to the Food Bank are deeply ashamed to ask for help to put food on the table let alone have to ask for essential hygiene products. This very generous and thoughtful donation from SCA is greatly appreciated.”
The charity is run by a network of volunteers who collect tinned and dried food and toiletries which have been donated by individuals, schools, faith groups and businesses in the local community.
Volunteers sort, pack and distribute the food bags through a network of distribution centres which are in direct contact with the people and families facing food poverty.
Cath Frost at SCA, said: “Toilet tissue and hygiene products are everyday essentials that can be expensive on a low budget. As a local company we’re delighted to do our bit to help those in our local community who are in need.”
