Businesses to compete in first Southampton Sailing Week

Businesses in the South will have the chance to test out their sea legs as part of a brand-new event this year.

The Business South League of Champions is a new sailing race taking place as part of Southampton Sailing Week (May 24 to 29).

Exclusive to Business South Champions, the event will give competitors the chance to battle it out for victory on the water against like-minded businesses. Those taking part will experience a full day of sailing hospitality, starting with breakfast at Banana Wharf in Ocean Village and ending with a trophy presentation. Each team of 10 will have its own professional skipper and first mate on board its Sunsail F40.

Sally Thompson, Chief Executive of Business South, said: “We’re very excited about the launch of the first ever Business South League of Champions. We’re well-known for our events on land but this is the first time we’ve run anything like this.

“It’ll be a great opportunity for businesses looking to reward their staff, take part in some teambuilding or entertain their clients while being part of a first for Southampton.”

Chris Rees, organiser of Southampton Sailing Week, said: “One of our biggest aims for Southampton Sailing Week is to bring the sport of sailing to a new audience. We hope that the League of Champions will inspire businesses who have perhaps never engaged with the sport before to give it a try.”

The itinerary for League of Champions, which takes place on Thursday, May 25, is as follows:

0800 - Arrival and Breakfast at Banana Wharf in Ocean Village

0830 - Kitted up and onto the Sunsail F40s from Ocean Village

1300 - 1500 - Networking and drinks for non-sailors in Banana Wharf

1330 - 1400 - Sailors head back into Ocean Village

1430 - Presentation of the League of Champions Cup to winning team

The race forms the second in a trio of competitive sporting events for Business South Champions. They will also get a chance to compete for glory in the ABP Southampton Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K in April and in the Cycle Southampton Criterium in September.

The first ever Southampton Sailing Week takes place from May 24 to 29 and feature six days of yacht racing, a parade of sail, regatta party, water sport taster sessions and much more. Various events will be taking place at MDL marinas in and around the city.
