Meet the three London IoT firms who will soon be rolling out their innovations across the capital

Future Cities Catapult has revealed the six Internet of Things (IoT) startups who are to be awarded £50,000 to help solve some of the biggest urban problems currently facing the capital.

Drawn from across the UK, the selected startups will now work with Future Cities to deploy their products across the centre’s IoT platform, Things Connected, a state-of-the-art connected network spread across the capital aimed at providing entrepreneurs and businesses with a platform to test their innovations.

Of the successful startups, three are based within London and they include:

  • BuggyAir, a startup working on a prototype to provide real-time data on pedestrian and cyclist exposure to pollutants
  • Foster and Partners, the London-based architecture practice which is developing a system to monitor noise pollution, to help residents collect data and visualise the sound around them
  • Joyride Technologies, a London and Toronto-based startup which is working in tandem with the London Cycling Campaign to monitor how families commute around the capital as cyclists
  • Edinburgh’s Beringar, which is testing light and environmental sensors to indentify under-utilised space within the health estate
  • KloudKeeper, the Exeter-based company working on smart capture technology for rainwater
  • Nymbly, the Cambridge business which has developed an air quality app that aims to improve ventilation, humidity and filtering in buildings.

The six startups will now begin working on testing and rolling out their technologies on the Things Connected Low-Power LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network), and have six weeks to deploy their innovations and demonstrate their viability.

Future Cities Catapult Chief Executive Officer, Peter Madden, commented: “We’re pleased to announce the winners of the ‘Things Connected’ Open Call, and look forward to seeing how they use IoT devices to solve city challenges ranging from flooding, to air pollution, to helping the NHS make better use of its buildings.

“Here at Future Cities Catapult we actively engage high-growth businesses to drive innovation for urban development. By supporting UK SME’s with funding, we further position the UK as a world leader in connectivity.”
