J Hart provides top tips on keeping warm!

Leading local plumbing and heating company, J Hart, are reminding people that there’s no need to shiver inside when it’s cold outside. First and foremost, they say, it’s vital to ensure your heating system is working properly.

Jonny Hart, founder and managing director of J Hart says: “We always ensure that we contact our customers to make sure that their heating systems are up to date.

“Our winter checks have always proven invaluable and have saved our clients a lot of heartache, and probably a few pounds, as a simple inspection can detect minor or more serious problems within their homes. We like to think we go the extra mile, especially when the weather turns bad.”

Every year J Hart carries out safety checks for its customers across Hull and East Yorkshire and makes sure that its older clients, and those who live in remote areas, are called on as a matter of course. But, in the meantime, here are some top tips to ensure you and your home stay cosy and warm, whilst saving on heating bills!

They advise programming your boiler to turn the heating on a little earlier – such as 30 minutes before you get up in the morning – but at a lower temperature. This makes it cheaper than turning it on just as you need it at the normal higher temperature. This is because a boiler heats up at a constant speed whether you set your thermostat to 20°C or 30°C.

If you have a hot water tank, make sure it is properly lagged – or insulated. This will keep the water warmer for longer, and reduce heating costs.

J Hart believe that insulating an uninsulated water tank could save up to £150 a year – but even just upgrading your tank’s ‘old jacket’ will help to save money.

Jonny Hart and his team of engineers explain that by installing heating controls and thermostatic radiator valves results in energy savings of 40 per cent compared to a house with no controls. This allows you to programme your heating to come on at predefined times – so you only use energy when you need it.

New smart thermostats can also be controlled remotely via your mobile so you can turn on your heating on the way home, ensuring it’s nice and toasty when you arrive.

If your boiler is more than 10 years old, it may be time to replace it with a new, more efficient model.
