Barratt Developments inspires local children with construction talk

Managing Director of Barratt Developments Yorkshire West, Ian Ruthven, recently visited Shibden Head Primary Academy to inspire young pupils with the world of construction. The school are hosting an exciting theme week focusing on ‘Future Careers’. The school visit from the house builder, which includes both the Barratt and David Wilson Homes brands, and has a range of developments across Leeds, continues Barratt’s commitment to contributing to the communities in which it builds, and to educate young people on the construction industry.

Ian Ruthven spent the morning at Shibden Head Primary Academy in Queensbury talking to the Year 2 children about all facets of the construction and housing industry, and the varying roles within it. Barratt Developments has increasingly invested in training and education of young people in construction through its college partnerships and its apprenticeship, graduate and sponsored degree programmes.

Ian Ruthven, Managing Director at Barratt Yorkshire West, commented: “It was brilliant to meet some of the children at Shibden Head Primary Academy and to teach them about the construction industry. It is really important to inform young people about different roles in all types of industries and I really hope they’ll be inspired to find out more to help them choose a career later in life!”

Miss Harrison, Assistant Head at Shibden Head Primary Academy, commented: “The children really enjoyed the visit from Ian and he got our pupils excited about the different roles in and processes of house building. I’m sure we’ll have a few aspiring construction workers in our class soon!”
