Kier appointed to deliver new £23m school in Sheffield

Kier, the property, construction, residential and services group, has been named preferred bidder to build the new Woodside School for Sheffield City Council.

The £23m project, which is Kier’s first contract awarded through the new YORbuild2 framework, will provide a new school from nursery to sixth form when completed and includes both new build and refurbishment aspects.

The scheme will see almost 9,000 sq m of new education space built while the existing Grade-II listed Pye Bank School building will be refurbished, providing a further 1,800 sq m of space.

When complete, the school will be able to accommodate 1,200 pupils.

Enabling works are due to start next month with the main construction phase beginning in the summer.

Kier recently completed the new £8.5m North Active Leisure Centre in Sheffield and has worked with the council for the past 12 years providing repairs and maintenance services to council tenants.

John O’Callaghan, Kier construction northern managing director, said: “We’re extremely pleased to be awarded this opportunity to provide a vital new school for Sheffield.

“We deliver on average 25,000 school places every year across the north and are confident that, by working closely with the council to understand their requirements, we can build a facility the City will be proud of.

“This is Kier’s first contract award through the YORbuild2 framework and we’re looking forward to continue working with local authorities and public sector bodies across the North of England as we help to play our part in establishing the Northern Powerhouse.”
