Film crew arrive at former Victorian prison in Liverpool for ‘top secret’ project

A film crew has arrived at The Bridewell in Liverpool to begin filming for a ‘top secret’ project.

While the producers involved remain tight-lipped regarding the work, Caro Developments - the developer behind the Grade II-listed former prison - has revealed that the team is creating footage for a new science series to broadcast internationally on an ultra-high definition channel.

The Bridewell was decommissioned as a prison 20 years ago, remaining derelict until 2013 when Caro Developments turned it into student accommodation and short-stay apartments.

During the project, the developer worked to retain many of the Victorian prison’s features, including the original façade and solid oak doors complete with food hatches and mortice locks. The site’s former exercise area is now a glass-covered atrium.

According to Caro Developments, the features have made the property a popular location among film makers.

Lee Darwen, the firm’s operations director, said: “The Bridewell truly is a unique building that contains so much history and character.

“For this reason, when we redeveloped the site it was extremely important for us to not lose the essence of the building’s rich history. I am thrilled that producers and film makers from across the country are showing so much interest in using The Bridewell as a filming location.”

He added: “It marks a celebration of Liverpool’s architectural history and strengthens the city’s status as a major player in the global film industry.”

Liverpool’s status as the film capital of the North has been growing in recent years.

During 2015, 257 film and TV projects contributed £11.5m to the city’s economy.
