Horsforth ranking reveals Yorkshire’s best-kept secret

YORKSHIRE’S BEST KEPT SECRET IS OUT, SAY ESTATE AGENCY, AS HORSFORTH RANKED THE 8TH BEST PLACE TO LIVE IN ENGLAND

IT’S the Leeds suburb with the cosy country village feel where Ed Miliband went to school and the Brownlee brothers grew up.

But now Horsforth has yet another claim to fame - after being crowned today (Wednesday March 1) as one of the best places in Britain for quality of life.

And according to Linley & Simpson, the residential sales and lettings agency who launched their branch there 20 years ago, its growing national reputation as a homes hotspot comes as no surprise.

“Since we opened our doors on Station Road back in 1997, Horsforth’s popularity as a place to live and work has grown year-on-year and this will only increase further now its attractions have been shared on a national scale,” said David Mear, Branch Manager.

“One of Yorkshire and Leeds’ best-kept secrets is now out – and will trigger yet another spike in inquiries, especially from outside the region.

“People who make Horsforth their home tell us that they love living so close to the city centre – yet it feels a million miles away because of everything they have on their doorstep – from sprawling green spaces to good nightlife and great transport links, buoyed by the opening of the new Kirkstall railway station.”

Horsforth was named as the 8th most desirable postcode in the whole of England – the only Yorkshire location to make the top 10.

The list was compiled by economists who rated locations according to work-life balance and access to good schools and green spaces.

David Reeves, Valuation Manager added: “Those people who also put down their own roots here – and that includes many of our staff – are taken at first sight with what it has to offer and tend to stay in their properties for much longer than the national average.

“It is a magnet particularly for families, thanks to the unrivalled schools – such as Featherbank and Newlaithes, where Ed Miliband spent his early years - that serve the community, as well as the ever-improving Trinity and All Saints’ College.”

Other attractions of Horsforth singled out by Linley & Simpson staff include parks, fine eateries, award-winning pubs and bars, sandwich shops, cultural richness and, good travel and transport links.

The study was carried out by the Centre for Economic and Business Research and the Royal Mail and scrutinised the last two years.

A number of data sources - including the 2011 Census, the Department for Communities and Local Government’s Indices of Multiple Deprivation, General Land Use database and numerous releases from the Office for National Statistics - all helped determine the best postcodes in the country.

Steve Rooney, Head of Royal Mail’s address management unit, said: “Royal Mail delivers to nearly 30 million addresses across the UK and helping connect communities and businesses.

“This new report builds on the study that we commissioned two years ago and provides a unique insight into the most desirable places to live and work through the lens of the postcode.”
