Newcastle Airport aiming to 'improve connectivity for businesses' as new Chief Exec is confirmed

Nick Jones has been officially appointed as Newcastle International Airport’s new Chief Executive, after holding the interim post since May last year.

Nick, who joined the Airport in 2015 as Chief Financial Officer, is no stranger to the region having spent six years as CFO at North East-headquartered Aesica Pharmaceuticals.

Nick, whose appointment coincides with a the airport’s strongest period of growth for almost a decade, said: “I am delighted to be confirmed as Chief Executive at one of the UK’s most successful airports.

“I am passionate about the north east region and my aim will be to further improve connectivity for businesses as well as providing popular holiday destinations for people in the region.

“I also want to ensure we build upon our reputation for providing the most welcoming customer experience.”

Councillor Iain Malcolm, Leader of South Tyneside Council, and Chair of the LA7 Airport Holding Company, added: “On behalf of the Local Authority Shareholders I am pleased that Nick Jones has accepted the offer to lead the airport at this important time.

“Our region needs a strong international gateway airport, generating huge benefits for the economy and many thousands of jobs. We look forward to working with Nick and his team to secure these outcomes.”

Citywing’s liquidation & Isle of Man service

In other Airport news, Newcastle’s Isle of Man service will continue despite the announcement of Citywing’s liquidation with Eastern Airways stepping in to secure the future of routes.

Flights from Newcastle started earlier this week (Monday 13 March 2017) with Eastern Airways offering daily weekday services to the Isle of Man on 29-seat Jetstream 41 aircraft.

The airline will also offer a morning one-stop connection from Newcastle to Belfast City Airport via the Isle of Man.

Leon McQuaid, Aviation Development Manager at Newcastle Airport, said: “We are delighted that Eastern Airways have announced plans to serve the Isle of Man.

“This announcement is great news for the North East travelling public. We have a strong relationship with Eastern and are pleased they have invested in the route which is well served by both business and leisure passengers.”
