£14m investment to create 110 affordable homes in Wigan

Wigan Council is set to approve a £14m investment in the construction of more than 100 affordable homes.

The plan will see three schemes funded, delivering 60 new properties on Park Road in Hindley, 20 on Anthorn Road in Winstanley and 30 on Mayfield Road in Orrell.

Building work is due to begin during the 2017/18 financial year, subject to planning consent.

The council said it is investing significantly in the programme and applying for Homes and Communities Agency funding.

The 110 properties will be let on affordable rents to applicants on the council’s housing register, but the authority said there could also be options for owner occupation or shared ownership.

The Hindley development will comprise eight two-bed bungalows and 32 two-bed, 16 three bed and four four-bed houses.

The Winstanley scheme, occupying the site of a former community centre, will create 20 bungalows for let to over 55s or those with long-term care needs.

In Orrell, the homes will consist of 18 two-bed bungalows along with eight two-bed and four three-bed houses.

The plans will go before Wigan Council’s cabinet next Thursday (March 23).

Wigan Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, Cllr David Molyneux, said: “This is a significant investment by the council in the type of new and affordable homes which are in high demand by our residents.

“As part of The Deal we are committed to delivering new homes to suit demand and playing a key role in making sure housing needs are addressed in the borough.”

He continued: “The types of homes, including bungalows, will also support the delivery of our innovative approach to social care by enabling residents to live longer and healthier lives in their own homes and reduce the demand and costs on care services and on hospitals.”

The council is aiming to build 250 homes in the next five years.
