Manchester Dogs’ Home to get new 12,000 sq ft adoption block

Contractor Medlock FRB has started work on a £1.6m project to deliver a new adoption block for Manchester Dogs’ Home.

The 12,000 sq ft facility is being built on a former car park on Moss Brook Road in Harpurhey, Manchester.

The project is the latest stage in the rebuilding of the dogs’ home, which was destroyed by a fire in 2014.

Oldham-based Medlock was selected for the scheme following a competitive tender and is due to complete the development by the summer.

The new block will include 32 kennels along with welfare facilities, offices and a viewing area for visitors to meet the animals they are thinking of adopting.

The cash for the new block was raised in a public appeal after the blaze.

Medlock’s head of business development, Steve Taylor, said: “It’s great to be involved in this project at Manchester Dogs’ Home, which has a place in the hearts of people across the region and beyond.

“The new building will be a fantastic facility that will enable hundreds of dogs to find loving homes and will bring and joy and happiness to the public and the rescued animals.”

A block for strays is currently being used as a temporary adoption centre while work on the new building is carried out.

Manchester Dogs’ Home manager Steve Mapley said: “The generosity of the public following the fire was amazing and has made it possible to construct the new adoption block, which will be another piece in the jigsaw as we rebuild the dogs’ home and look forward to once again operating at full capacity.

“The modern new facility will provide a better experience for the dogs and the public alike.”

The block was designed by Holmes Chapel-based Dickinson Waugh Architecture, with Cinns appointed as the scheme’s project manager.
