The virtuous recycling of Henderson’s Relish

~~In 1885, Henry Henderson started selling relish from his general merchant’s store in Broad Lane, Sheffield. Local shoppers would bring their used relish bottles for Henry to refill from large barrels within the store.

Fast forward 132 years, and the family-owned Sheffield firm is returning to the practices of its founder, using locally recycled glass for its famous Henderson’s Relish. The new 284ml bottle is made from 30% recycled content, with up to 10% made from glass recycled from the local area.

The new bespoke 284ml bottle has the Henderson’s Relish brand name embossed above its signature label, in a re-design that honours the memory of historic Henderson’s bottles from the early years of the last century.

“The Henderson’s Relish bottle is special” says general manager, Matt Davies. “It’s on our dinner tables and pictures of it decorate our walls. By using locally recycled glass we want to honour the relationship Sheffield has with Henderson’s Relish. Returning to an embossed bottle reminds us of 132-year history. We’re really pleased with the results”.

The new bespoke 284ml bottle is sourced from local glass supplier Beatson Clark.

“We are very pleased to design and manufacture a bespoke bottle for such a well-known local brand as Henderson’s,” said Chris Palmer, Business Development Manager at Beatson Clark in Rotherham.

“This is a great example of closed loop manufacturing because we recycle glass for the council and re-use it to make new bottles,” said Mr Palmer.

Henderson’s Relish is still being blended to the original secret recipe of Henry Henderson. The recipe remains a secret only known to three family members.

The new 284ml bottle of Henderson’s Relish will be available in all stockists from Monday March 27.
