Popular Cumbrian venue reopens after major refurbishment

A restaurant in Cumbria has reopened this month bringing with it one of the coolest Scandinavian trends - hygge.

Anna’s, in Millennium Promenade,Whitehaven, closed for a six week Scandi-style makeover as owner Anna Lowe decided to take the harbourside venue in a new direction with a new look, a new bar and a new kitchen.

Originally from Stockholm, Anna was inspired to bring the Scandinavian concept of hygge to Whitehaven Marina.

Hygge (pronounced hue-gah) is a Danish word that defines a feeling or mood that comes from taking genuine pleasure in making ordinary, everyday moments more meaningful.

Ms Lowe said: “We’ve stripped everything out and started again - it’s completely different to what it was six weeks ago.

“Customers can expect a warm welcome from our new manager, Adam Fitzsimons, and our front of house team.

“After fitting a new bar and kitchen we decided to give our food and drink menus a total overhaul too. We’re now serving a great selection of cocktails, as well as draught and bottled beer.

“Our new chef, Nathan Maguire, can’t wait to show off his skills by creating delicious burgers, exciting sharers, breakfasts and crepes. He’ll be using Cumbrian sourced ingredients wherever possible.

“And we’re delighted to be serving locally roasted coffee, supplied by West Cumbrian roasters Carvetii.”

Over the last few days, passers-by have been invited in to sample the new menus and get a first look at the Scandi-inspired interior.

Ms Lowe said: “Customers have commented that Anna’s feels a lot more spacious, but we’ve actually increased our seating capacity. Rather than 40 we can now seat up to 58 people.

“The refurbishment has taken longer than planned - but it’s been worth it.

“We’ve had fantastic feedback on our new look so far. I think customers are just as excited for our reopening as we are.”

Anna’s is open seven days a week, and will be opening on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings from April.
