Development complete at £18m 'high-end' extra care facility in Wythenshawe

A new ‘high-end’ residential-style extra care facility in South Manchester is set to open imminently after construction on the project was completed.

Village 135 is an £18m scheme in Wythenshawe designed by Pozzoni Architecture on behalf of Wythenshawe Community Housing Group and boasts 135 two bedroom apartments split across two buildings, each straddling opposite sides of Hollyhedge Road.

The units are designed for those 55 years and older, and range from 63 sq m to 80 sq m, with designs mindful ‘home for life’ standards which mean residents can continue to live at the new complex even if their care needs change.

Mimicking high-end residential complexes, the project also includes a range of community facilities including meeting spaces, an IT suite, bistro, salon and spa.

Following completion, Paul Reid, senior architectural technologist at Pozzoni, said: “As a practice we have built a reputation for delivering outstanding care and extra care facilities and Village 135 is an excellent example of this.

“As with all our designs, Village 135 is entirely focussed on the end user, not just in the short term but looking in to the future too. With this project, we wanted to create a building that is modern, yet homely and not from first glance a stereotypical care or older persons’ environment. “Through intelligent design we have achieved this and created a place where people can live independently in high quality surroundings whilst having the flexibility of adapting their level of care if their requirements change.”

Nigel Wilson, Group Chief Executive of Wythenshawe Community Housing Group, added: “We are delighted to launch this exciting, prestigious extra care scheme. These new homes will provide housing for older people through a mixed tenure of affordable rent, shared ownership and outright sales.

“Village 135 will provide Wythenshawe and the surrounding suburbs a variety of housing options if they wish to downsize or want to find something better suited for their ever-changing needs. The community hub, I am sure, will be very popular with the local community and will play a major part in establishing Wythenshawe as a place where people choose to live and work.”
