intu Metrocentre introduces signed Metrognomes shows for Easter

The region’s biggest shopping centre is putting on a day of British Sign Language interpreted shows for children with hearing impairments this Easter.

As part of a host of free family fun over the school holidays, intu Metrocentre is introducing BSL interpreted Metrognomes shows, including one that will be live streamed across social media for children who cannot be there on the day.

‘The Metrognomes and Mad King Manjy’ is the fun tale of how the Metrognomes have to save Easter from a crazy king who has banned eggs from his kingdom and on Friday 21st April all four shows, at 12pm, 2pm, 4pm and 6.30pm, will be fully signed for the audience by an on-stage interpreter.

The Metrognomes will be signing along to some of the songs in the show and there will even be a section of the show dedicated to teaching the audience some BSL.

The free shows, featuring the shopping centre’s loveable mascots, have been running for over 20 years and have been enjoyed by tens of thousands of children from across the north east.

Helen Atkinson, marketing manager at intu Metrocentre, said:

“Our signing Santa sessions at the Christmas Grotto for the past two years were incredibly popular – so much so that we couldn’t resist incorporating a signed element into our Metrognomes show!

“At intu Metrocentre we’re fortunate to have a number of staff members who are trained in BSL. Whether they are helping with fun children’s activities or using sign language to assist visitors with any queries they have - their skills are invaluable and help us to deliver an enhanced, inclusive shopping experience.”
