London Luton Airport records highest passenger milestone in 79 year history

15 million passengers travelled through London Luton Airport in the last 12 months, a new milestone in LLA’s 79-year history.

More than 1.2 million passengers flew through LLA In March - a 15.7% increase compared with the same period last year, marking three years of continuous growth at the airport.

LLA is currently investing in a major redevelopment which will enable its capacity to grow to 18 million in the next three years.

The growth of the airport is also reflected in the increased number of routes on offer. In March easyJet launched two new routes from LLA; to the Isle of Man and Stockholm (Sweden) whilst Blue Air introduced a new route to Cluj Napoca (Romania) and Ryanair began operating to Dusseldorf Weeze in Germany.

Monarch Airlines will also offer flights to Stockholm beginning this month, alongside a new service to Porto (Portugal).

LLA remains the only London airport without a direct express-style rail service and is calling for the introduction of four fast trains per hour from central London as part of the upcoming East Midlands rail refranchising process.

Nick Barton, CEO of LLA, said:“15 million passengers over 12 months is a significant milestone for us. We’re doing our bit to meet passenger demand and we hope the government and train operators will do their bit by introducing more fast trains to Luton.”
