Waste Management firm gears up for busy summer

NORTH EAST waste management firm Total Recycling Services is planning for a busy summer, celebrating its recent successful quality audit and working towards its £30m turnover target.

Based in Darlington, the company has set itself an ambitious target of £30m within the next five years, part of which is putting in place and maintaining key quality management systems throughout the business.

Total Recycling Services was recently commended during its audit for ISO 9001 in quality management systems, 14001 in environmental management systems and OHSAS 18001, a British Standard for occupational health and safety management systems.

Mark Walton, Integrated Management System Manager at Total Recycling Services, said: “We’ve got very ambitious targets here at Total Recycling, when I first started working with the company around eight years ago, we were a small venture doing small jobs.

“Now there really is no limit for us, we’re working with some of the region’s biggest manufacturing and packaging companies and have a full hazardous waste management facility on site allowing us to provide a full hazardous waste collection, recovery and disposal service as well as tank cleaning.

“The ISO accreditations are a worldwide benchmark and without them we couldn’t attract business from the bigger companies. Working to these strict accreditation levels allows us to make that first contact and be able to tender for bigger projects.

“The criteria needed involves different things. We have to ensure and demonstrate that we know what the needs and expectations of our customers are, whilst operating at a continuous high standard internally too.

“Feedback from the auditors has always been positive. Since the beginning we’ve had three different auditors and they’ve always been positive and constructive. Offering advice to help us continually provide a great service.”

The company is currently working on improving even further its’ supply chain, its’ risk management and adding scopes via the environmental permitting regulations and its’ existing permit to benefit its customers throughout the entire operation.

Alex Foreman, Managing Director of Total Recycling, said: “We’re constantly working to sustain our high level of health and safety through CHAS. We have also completed a SWOT analysis to determine our strengths and weaknesses and have formalised plans applicable to results.

“I’m really looking forward to maintaining these systems throughout the full team and ensuring the criteria is being achieved and running efficiently throughout as we work towards our turnover targets.”

Part of Total Recycling’s ambitious plans is also in the acquisition of other businesses across the North East. The company was most recently given a £6.7m investment form the British Growth Fund (BGF.)
