Carillion chosen for University of Manchester’s £75m Fallowfield project

The University of Manchester has chosen construction services giant Carillion to design and build phase one of its new Fallowfield Student Residences project, which will cost around £75m.

The scheme will see the university re-plan and upgrade the existing Fallowfield Campus to provide a wider range of accommodation, study and support services.

Following its appointment, Carillion will work to minimise environmental impacts and promote a sense of community as it designs and delivers the campus’ residences.

Phase one will comprise 1,122 cluster flat study bedrooms arranged in eight accommodation blocks, along with an energy centre, student amenity hub and associated landscaping.

The university cluster blocks are four-storey residential units designed in various configurations, but typically feature 10 bedrooms and a kitchen area on each floor.

Carillion will now develop its final design and construction proposals ahead of signing a contract with the university.

Construction is due to begin this August, for completion in Summer 2019.
