Sevcon kicks off first phase of its three-year triple digit recruitment drive

Team Valley electric vehicle business Sevcon has launched the first phase of its triple digit recruitment push as it looks to support its future growth over the next three years.

The initial push will see the firm add over 20 new members of staff in the coming months as it looks to expand its team of skilled engineers and technicians after adding £320m-worth of contracts to its order book.

In total, Sevcon is looking to boost headcount by 200 to add to the 80 skilled engineering staff it currently employs from its Team Valley base, where it designs and manufactures controllers used in green hybrid and electric vehicles.

The recruitment drive comes a little over a month after the firm was given the green light by Gateshead Council to upsize from its current premises to a new 55,000 sq ft HQ at the rear of Gateshead College’s Skills Academy for Construction on Kingsway.

Louise Morshead, Human Resources Manager at Sevcon, said: “Sevcon believes that a skilled, enthusiastic and driven workforce are the key to taking on the challenges to develop state of the art technology for the modern world of environmentally friendly vehicles.

“The business is growing quickly with many major motor manufacturers turning to Sevcon to support the switch from traditional petrol and diesel vehicles to next generation electric and hybrid vehicles.

“Sevcon has strong roots in the North East and is very keen to invest in and nurture local talent. In particular, we’re looking for male and female technicians and engineers wanting to make their mark in the world.”
