Morgan Sindall tops out at £6.8m Barnet SEN school

Construction firm Morgan Sindall has completed a significant milestone as part of the £6.8m expansion job at Oak Lodge School in Barnet.

The developers are currently delivering a new two-storey building for the at the special academy which is managed by Barnet Special Education Trust, and has now completed the super-structure and external facade of the expansion.

Once fully completed, the new building will include eight new classrooms, along with two therapy rooms, a PE hall, staff areas and an administration block. Plans are also in place for a music and art therapy room and two wet-room style hygiene rooms kitted out with the adjustable benches.

To mark the topping out ceremony, Lynda Walker, Headteacher at Oak Lodge School, commented: “The whole school community has been very excited to see this wonderful new structure take shape. Oak Lodge first opened in 1916 before moving to our current site in the 1970s.

“This building is a fitting celebration of our first 100 years of special education and will be known therefore as ‘The Centenary Building’.”

Morgan Sindall’s work on the site will also encompass a new sensory garden area for students and an easily-accessible car park for mini-buses dropping off and picking up students.

Neil Franklin, area director at Morgan Sindall, added: “We’re so pleased to have been able to hold this ceremony to celebrate the key milestone in the expansion of Oak Lodge School.

“This is a fantastic school, which enables young people of many varied abilities to learn together in an inclusive, accessible environment and our project team has thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the school community during its time on site.”
