Vélobici rides into regional awards shortlist

A Leicestershire company manufacturing high performance cyclewear is hoping for success after being shortlisted for a regional award.

Vélobici, based in Market Bosworth, has been shortlisted for the Export Award at the Made in the Midlands Awards, celebrating the region’s most successful manufacturers.

The nomination is a result of Vélobici’s continued efforts to promote its brand overseas and comes following a recent deal with Japanese distributors that has seen its jerseys, bib shorts and other garments stocked in the country for the first time.

The brand is also stocked in an additional 25 countries, including Taiwan, South Korea, Italy and the United States, and is now developing new lines to fulfil demand for its products in South East Asia.

Chris Puttnam, owner of Vélobici, comments: “Making the shortlist is a big achievement for Vélobici and one that we’re really proud of. We’ve consciously concentrated our efforts on growing the brand overseas within the last couple of years, particularly within markets where cycling is continuing to grow in popularity.

“The high tech specification of all our garments and accessories gives them excellent wicking properties and improved comfort movement. These properties are desirable for cyclists in all conditions, but particularly in warmer climates, which is why we are seeing sales grow rapidly in South East Asia.

“It is important to us that all of our garments are designed and produced within the county. We strongly believe that the country’s best textile knowledge and expertise are located here in the East Midlands and having access to that is key for us to continue to develop our renowned fabrics and continue our success overseas.”

In order to continue to develop the high tech fabrics used for its garments, Vélobici has recently opened its own factory in Leicestershire.

The expansion has enabled the firm to work on developing new fabrics and new designs, giving them a quicker turnaround and the ability to continue to be at the forefront of producing premium cyclewear.

The Made in the Midlands Awards takes place at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole on the 18th May.
