Bradford shopping centre “wheelie excited”

Bradford’s retail destination, Kirkgate Shopping, is “wheelie excited” about the arrival of the Tour de Yorkshire on 30 April.

Partnering with Pennine Cycles, centre manager Catherine Riley has “rallied” members of her retail and support team to mount bicycles on the roof of the carpark to celebrate the prestigious return of the tour to the city.

As part of the celebrations Kirkgate Shopping has partnered with Bradford Council and local artist Luke Owens who has been commissioned to work on land art projects for this year’s Tour de Yorkshire in Baildon and Queensbury.

Luke will produce a 10m x 10m artwork depicting two large chilies celebrating the Curry Capital status as well as the hashtags #LoveKirkgate and #LoveBradford.

Kirkgate’s ample parking facilities will not be affected by the road closures and are sure to be a hit with the thousands of cycle fans expected to arrive in Bradford.

The carpark entrance is located just off Godwin Street with a low cost pay-on-foot system, 600 spaces, security and CCTV patrol all within a four-minute walk to City Park.

On Sunday, Stage Three will begin at 12:10 as the final leg of the race continues through Bradford on to Bolton Abbey, Skipton and finishes in Sheffield. After the race, a publicity caravan is expected to keep the crowds happy with entertainment.

Sandra Corcoran, director of Pennine Cycles, said: “We have been looking forward to the Tour de Yorkshire’s arrival in Bradford for months now and are delighted to be able to support Kirkgate Shopping with their community celebrations.”

Catherine Riley added: “The Tour de Yorkshire has really put Bradford on the map and is a great opportunity for the community to get involved with a Yorkshire-wide event. We would like to welcome families to come to the centre after the race where we will be running in-store promotions and handing out treats to children to celebrate this momentous event.”
