£22m Liverpool road scheme to ‘greatly benefit’ new Everton stadium

Work is about to begin on a new multi-million pound dual carriageway to serve as a major route into the centre of Liverpool.

Construction firm Osborne is due to start widening Great Howard Street and Derby Road (the A565) this week with a programme of site investigations for the £22m scheme.

According to Liverpool City Council, upgrading the route between Sefton and Liverpool along the northern docks is a key element of a wider £100m regeneration effort across North Liverpool.

The new 2.7km stretch though the city’s Atlantic corridor is seen by the authority as crucial for the new Ten Streets creative village and Everton FC’s proposed ground at nearby Bramley Moore Dock.

Partly funded by the Liverpool City Region Growth Deal, the new dual carriageway will also enable a revamp of Regent Road, making the north docklands route more pedestrian and bike friendly with the creation of a continuous cycle route between Crosby and Liverpool.

Lane restrictions will be deployed instead of full closures to minimise disruption on the A565, where a new £10m bridge is being built for freight traveling to and from the new £400m Liverpool2 container terminal, part of property giant Peel’s £5.5bn Liverpool Waters scheme.

The project to overhaul Great Howard Street and Derby Road will finish in Summer 2019.

Liverpool’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Cllr Malcolm Kennedy, said: “I’m delighted work is to begin on making the A565 a full dual carriageway.

“Once complete it will benefit millions of journeys every year and will stimulate the renaissance in our Atlantic Corridor. I’m especially excited by the fact that this scheme will give Regent Road a completely new lease of life.”

He added: “This will greatly benefit the Ten Streets creativity zone as well as Everton’s plans for their new stadium.”

Osborne’s MD for infrastructure, John Dowsett, commented: “Starting these works is highly significant to us and we look forward to helping to improve the infrastructure for Liverpool’s city centre.

“This sees us working with forward thinking local authorities who recognise the collaborative approach we bring.”
