The Cheese Bar has opened its first permanent site in the capital
Food truck favourite The Cheese Bar has now opened its first-ever permanent site after taking just six weeks to get the venue up and running.
The new eatery in Camden Market opens following a £100k crowdsourcing campaign by founder Mathew Carver which reached its target in just five days, and encompasses a 750 sq ft space in the Grade II listed stable blocks at the historic retail and leisure hotspot.
Serving up the brand’s cheese-based menu, which mixes the best of British cheese toasties with artisan beers, the brand has built up a strong reputation on the street food circuit which Carver ran from an old ice cream truck.
Work on the new venue has been overseen by construction services business ISG along with design work by Kennedy Woods Architecture, with bespoke fittings and furnishings produced in ISG’s joinery workshop in Whitstable.
Following the opening, Mike Klosek, Joinery Director at ISG, said: “The Cheese Bar’s first permanent home is a case study in how space and historical restrictions need not confine the ambition and quality for a new restaurant concept.
“It is the fusion of a fantastic design concept with custom fabrication to create a space that celebrates the best of British ingredients, which the restaurant prides itself on introducing to its customers.”
Tom Wood, Director, Kennedy Woods Architecture, added: “We worked closely with The Cheese Bar’s founder to define his brief and it became apparent from the outset that we needed to create a refined, unfussy identity that would allow the provenance and quality of hand-selected cheeses to take centre stage.
“Every design we made was about allowing the produce to shine – from the large fridge wall showcasing craft beers, home-made pickles and cheese truckle to the huge, backlit menu board.”
