Transformation of York city centre’s Stonebow House gets off the ground

A York city centre building is set to undergo a transformation as Caddick Construction begins work on Stonebow House this month.

Scheduled to take 11 months to complete, the work will transform the 1960s building and will include the replacement of the existing, dated cladding to a vibrant modern cladding and glazing.

The completed development will provide 17 luxury residential apartments and up to four ground floor commercial units.

Caddick Construction was awarded the £7.5m contract in February by Wetherby-based developers Oakgate.

Andrew Murray, managing director of Caddick Construction, commented: “This is a really exciting project in terms of regeneration for this important route into York and we’re thrilled to be involved.

“While the sound structure of the building will be retained, Stonebow House is set to be completely renovated inside and out, bringing a brand new look and feel to the street as well as providing 31,500 sq ft of retail and leisure space.”

Chris de Whytell, Caddick Construction’s contracts manager for the project, added: “The initial works will focus on stripping the building back to its original structure. Local residents should expect to see hoarding and scaffolding around the building and during the initial phases of the development.”

Richard France, managing director of Oakgate, also said: “Caddick Construction has the relevant experience and skill set to deliver this substantial refurbishment project and I’m looking forward to seeing the completed product in Spring next year.”

Caddick Construction and Caddick Civil Engineering are the operational arms of Caddick Group PLC. The Group employs almost 500 people and its turnover is £90m.
