Revealed: Yorkshire’s top ten wealthiest named in Sunday Times Rich List 2017

The new addition of the Sunday Times Rich List, which is to be published on Sunday May 7th, has revealed the wealthiest people from Yorkshire in 2017.

Property tycoons, technology entrepreneurs and retail gainst all made this year’s list.

1.The latest addition has named Robert Miller as the region’s richest person as his fortune comes in at £1.58bn. Mr Miller is the co-founder and owner of Duty Free Shoppers (DFS), which can be found in airports around the globe. The American billionaire and his wife Marie Chantal are also the owners of the 36,000-acre Gunnerside Estate in Swaledale, North Yorkshire.

2. Eddie and Malcolm Healey - The brothers behind Sheffield’s Meadowhall Shopping Centre once again named among the region’s wealthiest. Although the Healey’s sold the centre for £1.17bn in 1999, they still come second the list with an estimated fortune of £1.48bn.

The businessmen’s West Retail Group, which operates Wren Kitchens and the electronics retailer Ebuyer, saw sales hit £446m in a record year in 2015.

3. French-born businessman Tony Murray, who is the oldest person on this year’s rich list at 97, is the owner of heating and air-conditioning equipment hire company Andrew Sykes Group, as well as London Security, the Leeds-based fire protection business.

Mr Murray finishes third on the list with a wealth of £1.17bn.

4. Doncaster-born businessman Lord Kirkham, the man behind furniture giant DFS, comes in fourth place after making his wealth with the sale of the the furniture chain in 2010. Mr Kirkham also owns large shares in Iceland supermarkets and the Whitby fish and chip shop chain, which has earned him a total of £1.15bn.

5. Paul Sykes - After making his fortune with he Highstone Group and Highstone Estates, which is based in Harrogate, property tycoon Paul Sykes also helped the Healeys develop Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield. Mr Sykes, who also owns internet firm Planet Online, ranks fifth in the list with a wealth of £710m.

6. Doncaster businessman Terry Bramall sold Keepmoat construction group, which specialised in social housing, for more than £500m several years ago. Terry, who is a director of Doncaster Rovers Football Club, hits the sixth spot with a wealth of £425m.

7. Roderick Evans makes the list with £00m. Mr Evans is the owner of the Evans Property Group, which boosts a large number of properties such as the Minerva and Capitol Houses, 1 Park Row and the White Rose Shopping Centre.

8. Jack Tordoff, the man who founded JCT600, the Bradford-based new and used motor retailer, boasts an impressive fortune of £395m.

9. Peter Wilkinson, the technology tycoon from Harraogate, has earned himself millions, £385m to be exact, with the launch, development and sale technology companies including Planet Online, Sports Internet and InTechnology.

10. Rounding off the top ten is Leeds businessman Philip Meeson with a fortune of £296m. Mr Meeson is chairman of the Dart Group, which owns Jet2 and Fowler Welch.

Robert Watts, the Compiler of the Sunday Times Rich List, said: “This year’s larger than ever Rich List lays bare how the fortunes of Britain’s richest 1,000 people have fared amid the astonishing events of the past 12 months.

“Our Yorkshire Rich List reinforces the county’s proud reputation for producing some of the UK’s most successful self-made men and women and shows the increasingly diverse ways fortunes are being made.

“Gone are the days when big money was usually amassed from finance, industry or a select band of other industries. Now we’re seeing vast fortunes built from activities as diverse as fitted furniture, greetings cards and plumbing.”
