Work begins on major student accommodation scheme in Leeds city centre

S Harrison, the York-based property development company, has now started work on a new student accommodation scheme located close to Leeds city centre’s main university campuses.

GMI Construction Group PLC has been appointed the lead contractor on the project.

As part of the work, a former office block is currently being demolished to make way for a seven storey building that will offer 180 en-suite bedrooms spread across 29 cluster apartments.

Each apartment will all benefit from large, shared kitchen, living and dining spaces.

The development is located on Blenheim Walk between Leeds College of Art and Leeds Student Medical Practice.

There will also be communal facilities including a reception area, study rooms, games area and common room, complete with a green courtyard and cycle parking.

Steve McManaman from York based S Harrison, said: “This promises to be an exceptional and sought after development at the heart of the city’s university district and within easy walking distance of Leeds city centre, so we’re delighted that work is underway.

“GMI is a highly reputable Leeds company with excellent local knowledge and a strong track record on large scale projects, which made them the ideal contractor to work with on this development.

“Work clearing the site is due to complete this month and construction work will then start immediately with the scheme due to complete in time for the start of the 2018/19 academic year.”

Andy Bruce from GMI added: “This is a superb project to be working on that is designed to a high specification and will create a modern, landmark building in this fast evolving part of Leeds, which is a key gateway into the city centre.”
