British Airways recommences full flight schedule
After being forced to cancel thousands of flights over the bank holiday weekend, British Airways has announced that all flights should now be operating as normal.
Following a ‘major’ IT systems failure which struck the airline on May 27th, causing chaos for around 75,000 passengers, British Airways has now said: “Our IT systems are now back up and running and we will be operating a full flight schedule at Heathrow and Gatwick on Tuesday 30 May.
“We are extremely sorry for the frustration and inconvenience customers experienced over the Bank Holiday weekend and thank them for their patience and understanding.
“We are continuing to work to get delayed bags to customers as quickly as possible.”
Despite a full flight schedule now recommencing, many passengers have also been warned that due to this weekend’s “catastrophic” system failure “it may take some time” before all luggage is reunited with passengers.
British Airways also stated: “We are continuing to make good progress in reuniting bags with customers around the world who were affected by the major IT systems failure on Saturday.
“Although we have already flown many bags to the correct airport, there is still some work to do and we know there are still significant numbers of customers who are yet to receive their luggage.”
Alex Cruz, British Airways chief executive, has since explained that a power surge was to blame for the IT systems failure and that he was “profusely apologetic” to all the passengers affected by this.
He told the BBC that the worldwide IT glitch had affected “all the operating of our systems - baggage, operations, power processing”
The airline is now facing a costly compensation bill that could top £100m.
