New Taiwanese restaurant concept launches debut in Chinatown

Chinatown has welcomed the debut Taiwanese restaurant concept from the founders of BAO in Soho and Fitzrovia with the opening of Xu on Rupert Street.

The new restaurant in the West End has opened at 30 Rupert Street at a 2,479 sq ft unit in Chinatown, offering up 74-covers over its two levels with style cues influenced by 1930s Taiwan.

Designed in collaboration with Brady Williams, the eatery also boasts an emerald tea counter serving up competition level leaf teas as well as a traditional Taiwanese tea brewing ceremony.

Shing Tat Chung, Co-Founder of Xu said: “Opening XU in one of the West End’s most iconic destinations has been extremely exciting for us. The location benefits from fantastic footfall, so it’s proving to be a great place for our debut restaurant.

“Chinatown London offers visitors an exciting and diverse dining offer, and we are proud to add our traditional Taiwanese cuisine into the mix.”

The new opening comes at a time of significant investment from property firm Shaftesbury in and around Chinatown, most notably with the announcement of Central Cross, a new 48,000 sq ft mixed-use scheme that will provide more retail and restaurant units across its three floors.

Julia Wilkinson, Portfolio and Group Restaurant Strategy Executive at Shaftesbury, commented: “We are elated XU has opened its debut site in Chinatown, London, and joined our diverse mix of restaurants.

“The concept’s Taiwanese origins presented as a modern dining experience, reflect our curation of Chinatown London to create a destination that embraces East Asia traditions alongside modern culture.”
