Politicians Back Pendower Hall Plans

Even though this past week has been one of the busiest weeks of any politician’s career, a number of the North East’s leading lights have voiced their backing for a proposed development scheme in Benwell.

Just last week the developer planning to renovate and extend Pendower Hall announced revised plans after extensive consultation.

Cllr Jeremy Beecham, amongst other influencers, has been so impressed by the work ethic of the developer and their aims for the historic and important building, that he has given it his full backing prior to he planning committee giving final agreement.

The veteran Newcastle Councilor, Labour NEC and Shadow Justice Minister in Lords said:

“Pendower Hall Limited is aiming to breathe life back into a Grade II listed building, which has stood empty for a decade. That’s to be commended!

“In my opinion, the proposed transformation into a hub for businesses and a conference and banqueting facility for up to 450 in the Grand Hall is just what the area needs.

“The developers have worked closely with and actually listened to the residents and this is reflected in the final plans, which I think look very acceptable.”

Extensive public consultation and liaison with the council has been ongoing since October 2016. This activity has helped to refine the designs for refurbishing and adapting the former home of the Pease family into a business campus suitable for creating jobs and inward investment, alongside the Grand Hall extension perfect for conference and banqueting.

Careful attention to detail will ensure the refurbishment reflects the historic characteristics of the hall, whilst the many archaeological finds from the nearby Military Way and Vallum will provide the basis of unique exhibitions, displays and interpretation for visitors and schools.

David Redhead, project manager at Pendower Hall Ltd, said:

“We are delighted to have the backing of Cllr Jeremy Beecham. We have also had interaction with Cllr Rob Higgins, who also seems excited with the master plans and is in support of our intensions.

“We have had very positive conversations with many other policy influencers at Newcastle Council and we would like to thank them for their time and encouragement.

“We are not just aiming to bring a derelict building back to use. We anticipate the creation of 100 or more jobs, better light for all the adjacent properties and the preservation of a historical site for all to enjoy.”

Essential to the commercial viability of the scheme is the extension of the Grand Hall. Peter Nugent, Conservation Architect at Ainsworth Spark, is using his many years’ experience of working on listed buildings to create a stunning extension that balances heritage and business.

The revised plans and proposals will be submitted shortly; council officers and councilors will then consider them, with work aiming to start in the Autumn.
