Buyer sought for 350-year-old Cumbrian inn

A centuries-old inn located near Heads Nook in Cumbria has come to market.

String of Horses Inn & Restaurant is being sold by leisure property valuers and surveyors Fleurets off a guide price of £695k.

The venue dates back to 1659, when it was used by travelling merchants as they stopped to rest and harness a new string of horses to the stagecoach.

The property’s interior retains its history, with oak beams and panelling featuring throughout along with open fires and brassware.

In addition to its traditional bar and dining facilities, String of Horses offers 11 en suite letting rooms and a three-bedroom owner’s accommodation.

Fleurets was instructed to secure a buyer for the property by its current owners, Colin and Jill Ramsay.

Fleurets’ Lesley Watmough, who is marketing the premises, said: “Colin Ramsay purchased the business nine years ago and has since chosen to run the site as a lifestyle business, closing throughout January and every Monday.

“He also does not open at lunchtimes, and the business operates between 6pm–11pm Tuesday to Sunday.”

Lesley added: “Despite this, our client has been growing the turnover steadily to show figures for the last three years of £244k, £243k and £255k.”

The String of Horses is offered on a freehold tenure.
