Former asylum seeker opens Afro-Caribbean restaurant in Wigan
A former asylum seeker who fled his war-torn African homeland for a new life in Wigan has opened a restaurant in the town.
Obi Oderinde is the owner of D’Empire, a new Afro-Caribbean eatery based in Wigan’s Wallgate.
The 23-year-old left Nigeria with his family 13 years ago and became an asylum seeker in Manchester.
From there they were moved to Hindley, where they decided to make their new home.
Obi commented: “I have been brought up believing that to be successful you have to work hard. Things don’t come easy in life.
“Wigan has been amazing. Great people who have helped my family through hard times and now I’m happy.”
In addition to its Afro-Caribbean menu D’Empire, which Obi spent 20 hours a day helping to refurbish, has DJs playing music in the evening.
Speaking further, Obi said: “It’s something different for Wigan, something new.
“We aim to bring everyone from all cultures to D’Empire to have a good time and enjoy some good food. So I hope people come down and try it out.”
Wigan Council’s lead member for community and family safety, Cllr Nazia Rehamn, said: “Obi’s story illustrates the fantastic supportive local communities we have in Wigan Borough.
“It is amazing to see Obi living his dream with a new business and a great future ahead of him.”
D’Empire will host a launch night on Friday June 30.
