Plans for 50 new homes unveiled at consultation event

PLANS to bring more affordable housing to Newcastle have been unveiled.

Gosforth based housing provider Home Group has revealed proposals to build 50 mixed-tenure new homes in a popular area.

The not-for-profit company hopes to build a combination of Tyneside flats, bungalows and houses in Roundhill Avenue, Blakelaw.

The homes would be built on the site of a former block of flats which were demolished a number of years ago.

Plans were unveiled at a consultation event held at Blakelaw Community Church which was attended by neighbouring residents.

Chris Haggon, Home Group development manager, said: “We were very pleased with the comments which came from those who attended the event. People took time to examine the proposals and the overall response was positive.

“People recognised that there is a shortage of housing and the need to build more for people who want to rent and those who want to buy. There were some concerns over parking but many residents felt our proposals could help alleviate existing problems.”

The homes would be a mixture of two, three and four bedroom properties. Around 20 would be affordable homes available for rent or shared ownership to local people. Each property would have an off street parking space and an area has been put aside for visitors’ parking.

Chris said: “When Home Group builds houses we then remain in the community managing them. Events like this are important so that existing residents can ask questions, see and comment on our plans at the earliest opportunity and we’re grateful to those who attended.”

Home Group will now finalise plans taking into account residents’ views before submitting a planning application to Newcastle City Council.
