Caddick Construction sponsors local author book launch

Primary school children from across Leeds swapped their thinking caps for hard hats at a local author’s book launch, as Yorkshire-based Caddick Construction hosted a live book reading at Headingley Carnegie Stadium.

Students from Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, Brudenell Primary School and Adel Primary School attended the Stadium for a reading by Leeds grandmother Chris Madeley of her latest book Cones on Site, all about staying safe on construction sites.

The children were also treated to a talk from Steve Pitts, Project Manager at Caddick Construction. He spoke to students about the importance of protective clothing on site. Afterwards, there was the chance to see a brand new excavator up close.

Steve said: ‘This has certainly been different to a normal day at work for me but it’s been an absolute pleasure.

‘Safety is the number one priority on our sites and it is vital that children living near live sites are fully aware of the dangers that are present. This book is a fantastic way to get that message across in a fun, educational way.’

The book is part of an educational series which follows a group of traffic cones that come to life. This instalment, sponsored by Caddick Construction, sees the Cones learning about safety on building sites.

The author, Chris Madeley, said: ’The initial idea for The Cones books came to me as I was driving down the M1 and held up by roadworks. As I sat there surrounded by traffic cones I began imagining that they could come alive and go on adventures – and my first book, Meet the Cones, was born.

’As research for the book I spent some time with the team on a Caddick building site to learn a bit more about the potential hazards and safeguards in place, and the story began to take shape.

‘I hope the students enjoyed the reading today as I certainly did!’

The students attending all left with a copy of the book for their school libraries, as well as a book to take home.
