Wallsend electrical engineering firm seals five-figure Innovate UK funding

CMR Group, the Wallsend-based engineers developing hard-wearing electrical wiring harnesses for industrial diesel and gas engines, has sealed a five-figure funding boost from Innovate UK to help develop its next generation product.

The electrical engineering firm has said it intends to put the funding to use as part of its major research and development programme focused on designing and developing its next generation ‘people-centered’ harnesses.

The harnesses themselves are utilised in high horsepower engines in major industries such as construction, mining, power generation, oil, gas and marine environments, and help to connect the electronic control unit (ECU) with other parts of the engine to help it perform more efficiently.

Specifically, the new funding will allow the North East business to undertake development work, investigating potential new designs for harnesses that will be more user focused, including replicating the harsh engine operating conditions and any redesigns.

James Thwaites, VP group marketing at CMR commented: “We’re delighted that our reputation as technical innovators in engine wiring systems has been recognised by an award that helps us to develop this important project in the North East.

“Our work will push boundaries in the development of more effective wiring harnesses that better meet the needs of users and the wider industrial engine sector.

Lee Willmott, CMR’s group NPI manager said: “We anticipate that this project will deliver an excellent return on investment and longer term add even more value to the products and engineering solutions provided to our customers in the UK, Europe and elsewhere.”
