Teesside steel fortifies multi-million pound Cleveland Police development

Cleveland Police’s new Community Safety Hub is quickly coming together in Hemlington, Middlesbrough, built using around 100 tonnes of Teesside steel.

Developer Esh Build was instructed by the Police and Crime Commissioner to use exclusively British steel in the multi-million pound base’s construction.

Along with a further 140 tonnes from other British sites, around £300k worth of steel is being used in the site build.

The 3,600 sq ft Hub will provide a base for Cleveland police officers and staff as they tackle complex and life threatening issues using the latest technology.

As the flagship building for policing on Teesside, the Safety hub will house the police control room where major decisions take place.

Paul Redman, divisional director of Esh Build, an Esh Group company, said: “The construction of the Community Safety Hub is both economically and socially important to the Cleveland area.

“As build partners Esh is determined to drive maximum value for the local supply chain – and that means buying local products and services.

“It’s exciting to be using steel produced on the doorstep. Doing so has the added benefit of protecting jobs on Teesside, reducing the carbon footprint of the project and guaranteeing we have quality products to use.”

Police and Crime Commissioner Barry Coppinger said: “The best steel in the world comes from Britain so it’s fantastic that such an important building will be using materials from the local area.

“The Community Safety Hub will leave a lasting legacy for local people and by using Teesside steel, it will boost the local economy and manufacturing in the area. I’m pleased that Esh has given a commitment to ensure that 85% of suppliers are within a 25 mile radius of the area.”
