Morale Skyrockets As Care Home Celebrates Moon Landing

A Nottingham-based care home is taking its residents to infinity and beyond in order to celebrate the anniversary of the first moon landing.

Hazelgrove Care Home, based in Hucknall, Nottingham, has dedicated the month of July to celebrating 48 years since the historic moon landing on July 20, 1969.

Carers and residents have been busy transforming the care home into an out of this world spectacle with a gallery of the stars wall display, space themed food, homemade rocket-shaped bunting crafted by the residents, and a variety of astronaut and alien masks for fancy dress.

Whilst sharing memories of the moon landing, one resident, 83, said: “It was an exciting time; everyone just couldn’t believe that there had been a landing on the moon!

“It may not seem all that special now, but it was such a big event then and everyone was talking about it.”

The care home, which is part of the Milford Care Group, frequently hosts activity days and books entertainment for its residents, including visits from entertainers, day trips and themed celebrations.

Rebecca Godber, Activities Co-ordinator at Hazelgrove Care Home, said: “We came up with the idea to have an event each month that held some significance for the residents and so far, it’s gone down really well!

“We’ve really enjoyed preparing for July to honour the first ever moon landing. It is something that a lot of residents can remember as it was a huge achievement within their generation.”

“It’s the little things that make the day different. We design these days for the residents to entertain and stimulate them and improve their overall wellbeing”
