East Yorkshire craft beer producer brews up expansion plans for family farm

Great Newsome Brewery, an East Yorkshire-based craft beer producer, is marking 10 years in business with the announcement of new expansion plans.

The brewery, which operates from a fourth generation family farm at South Frodingham in Holderness, has submitted plans to East Riding of Yorkshire Council to enable it to increase the size of the brewery so it can double production capacity.

Great Newsome has won numerous accolades, including a World Beer Award for classic Frothingham Best bitter.

Director Matthew Hodgson said the their success is a result of focusing on producing classic artisanal beers.

Mr Hodgson said: “Our beer is very drinkable and made using malt from barley grown on our farm. People will come back to them time and time again. We are 100% committed to quality, sustainability and longevity.

“By remaining true to our roots and acknowledging our strengths, we have retained and grown our share in an increasingly crowded market, which is now become dominated by brands taking inspiration from alternative culture.”

Over the last decade, Great Newsome has extended its customer base from Yorkshire to the rest of the UK and it has started selling overseas. The Brewery has also collaborated with several retailers including Asda, Waitrose and Morrisons and with garage forecourt shops.

Back in 2007, Great Newsome was launched with a rural development grant from Defra.

Mr Hodgson explained: “It was a family decision and we bought a brewery as big as the budget would allow. Our first beer was Sleck Dust followed closely by Pricky Back Otchan. They remain favourites today and we still supply our original customers.”

Great Newsome has sold more than 60 beers and is this year brewing the official Hull 2017 cask and bottled beers under the Brewculture label.
