FIRST-TIME BUYERS IN NOTTINGHAM INVEST IN INNOVATIVE LOW-ENERGY PROPERTIES

As renewable energy becomes a more cost-effective source of powering homes, a new residential scheme in Nottingham has seen a trend of first-time buyers pulled in by its energy-saving credentials. More than a third (36 per cent) of the homes which have been reserved or bought to date in Phase One at Trent Basin, have been sold to first time buyers – indicating that young people looking for their first home are interested in and passionate about leading a ‘greener’ lifestyle. Located on the banks of the River Trent and developed around an historic inland dock, Trent Basin - which will ultimately comprise up to 500 homes - is built using low energy design principles, combining waterside living with community living, while introducing innovative renewable energy technology at a community level. Less than a 15-minute walk from the city centre, Trent Basin is central to Nottingham City Council’s £250m waterside regeneration project. Nick Ebbs, Chief Executive at Blueprint – the award-winning developer behind Trent Basin - said: “For a long time, energy efficiency in a home was at the bottom of many first-time buyers’ priority list, but the rising cost of living means that future homeowners now need to look for sensible and alternative means to save on living expenses. “The housing sector in the UK has been slow to adapt to meet the change in demand from consumers who want low energy solutions, but Trent Basin is actively addressing that demand. Throughout the scheme, we have given huge thought to the design and individual environment of each of the houses. Each home meets the 2016 Fabric Energy Efficiency Standards and reaches the proposed maximum space heating and cooling energy demand for zero carbon homes, thanks to airtight building structures, triple glaze windows and state-of-the-art insulation systems. “By using a Fabric First approach, the homes maximise the performance of building components and materials before considering the use of other energy facilities. As a result, residents will benefit by using less energy and will in turn save money on their energy bills.” Every property at Trent Basin has been designed to maximise views to the river. The aim is to bring new spaces and activity to the water’s edge, providing residents with green, communal areas in which to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Nick added: “We are always keen to promote health and wellbeing, regeneration and environmental sustainability at every step and first-time buyers understand that they are not just investing in future savings and sustainability but also a lifestyle at Trent Basin with waterside living, green spaces and a community. “We hope to continue introducing new pioneering technology at every stage of the development to ensure the energy-saving benefits for residents continue to grow. This will include power hubs for battery powered vehicles and we are also working together with the UK’s innovation agency, Innovate UK - an executive non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy - to introduce Europe’s largest community energy battery at Trent Basin, helping to provide cheaper, cleaner energy for the residents. “With the Help to Buy scheme also available, Trent Basin is a worthwhile investment for any first-time buyer.” Property prices at Trent Basin start from £225,000, ranging to £400,000. Just three homes are left for sale in Phase One. Work on site for Phase Two of Trent Basin is planned to start later this year.
