Local company wins at MRW National Recycling Awards

Timberpak Limited was voted the outright winner in the Resource Management Business of the Year category at the recent MRW National Recycling Awards.

At a glittering event in the London Hilton on Park Lane, Timberpak impressed the judges with its innovative and successful business approach. This has seen the company expand from one site in 2000 to four sites across the UK.

To win the Resource Management Business category, Timberpak had to demonstrate exceptional customer service, market innovation, growth and high performance, as well as handling waste responsibly.

On being presented with the award, the judges commented: “Timberpak has a clear vision supported by investment in capital equipment and its workforce. It has an obvious commitment to the market, through staff development and education with customers. A great example of the circular economy in action.”

Mark Hayton, Director of Timberpak commented: “It is great to see the hard work and commitment of our employees recognised by this award, which has seen our business go from strength to strength. There were only two of us back in 2000 and we are now a team of 42 strong based in Washington, Tyne & Wear; Leeds, Yorkshire; Bellshill, Lanarkshire and St Albans, Herefordshire.”

Strategic approach to recycling wood

As a subsidiary of EGGER (UK) Ltd, Timberpak was set up to secure the supply of high-quality recycled wood for its parent company. EGGER is a market leader in manufacturing wood-based materials and in the UK its two manufacturing sites produce raw chipboard and melamine faced chipboard (MFC) for the furniture, interior design and building markets.

Gavin Ball, Timberpak Customer Relationship Manager explained: “Timberpak has a strategic approach to setting its targets, objectives and commitments, which are driven by EGGER’s need for high-quality recycled wood – a maximum of 40% of the raw material in EGGER chipboard is recycled wood.

“EGGER is the largest consumer of recycled timber in the wood-panel industry and its requirements for recycled wood from Timberpak continue to increase. This is good news for our customers, as it means we have a guaranteed outlet for their material.”

EGGER is a market leader and has consistently grown during the past decade and now produces approximately 1.1millon m3 of chipboard each year. Its products are used throughout everyday life and feature in a range of applications, including: cupboards and doors in kitchens; wardrobes and units in bedrooms; desks and drawers in offices; furniture and wall panelling in hotels; counters and shelving in shops and structural flooring in the house-building industry.

In the 30+ years EGGER has been manufacturing in the UK it has produced enough melamine faced board to build one and a half kitchens in every home in the UK and made enough tongue and groove to floor more than two million homes.

Environmental benefits

There are also clear environmental benefits from the EGGER/Timberpak partnership. Through its closed-loop cycle, recycled wood collected by Timberpak is used to make board by EGGER, and only wood that cannot be recycled is used for its energy requirements. The two operations also ensure that the backhauling capabilities of vehicles are utilised for maximum efficiency and reduced environmental impact.

Timberpak enables businesses, manufacturers, demolition firms, local authorities and waste management companies to reduce the amount of waste wood on which they have to pay landfill tax and helps them meet their recycling targets.
