Local housebuilder inspires next generation with site visit

23 students from Buttershaw Business & Enterprise College in Bradford paid a visit to David Wilson Homes’ The Grange development in Lightcliffe, Halifax, last week, to meet the site team and gain hands on experience to couple with the theory behind their course.

Year 10 students, aged between 14 and 15, from the Design, Engineer and Construct programme at the college visited the site gain insight into the housebuilding process, with particular focus on the components going into the architectural process of the build.

David Wilson Homes’ is committed to creating strong bonds with the communities in which it builds and is passionate about inspiring young minds to consider taking roles within the housebuilding industry. The visit from the college is the latest in ongoing, local initiatives that have seen the housebuilder link up on projects with Lightcliffe Academy, the local high school based across the road from The Grange development.

Joseph Ryan, Assistant Headteacher for Student Experience and Course Leader of the Design, Engineer and Construction course, commented: “Our students have a keen interest in learning more about the construction industry with some definitely hoping to progress in construction based careers when they leave school, so it’s great that they got the opportunity to visit a live site. The site team at The Grange were extremely accommodating and gave our youngsters lots of great advice to help them in their education. Buttershaw Business & Enterprise College is one of only two schools offering this course to GCSE level pupils in the area, so the students are extremely fortunate to have these opportunities available to them.”

Being able to offer this site visit meant we could give the students a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into building a development like The Grange, and also give them the opportunity to further their understanding and boost their passions for design and construction.

“It’s important that we have strong bonds with our communities and the more that we can do to inspire the younger generation, the better.”
