Revealed: What a PRS developer is planning for a Grade II listed former fire station in Newham

Red Door Ventures, the Newham Council-owned PRS developer, will soon get to work converting an historic landmark in East Ham into new flats and apartments for private rent.

The developer obtained planning permission last week to convert the Grade II listed East Ham Old Fire Station into five one bedroom and two two bedroom apartments, along with a new restaurant or cafe on the ground floor.

Plans for the development include the retention and refurbishment of the historic fire station’s features, which has sat on the site since 1913, and will take advantage of the property’s current layout which Red Door says is ideally suited to the development of flats due to the former firemen accommodation on the first and second floors.

Particular care will be expended on retaining the original flavour of the property’s four large doors that face on to High Street North which were originally used as an entrance for the site’s fire engines but have since been replaced with PVC sliding doors.

Red Ventures have said they intend to replace the ‘unsympathetic, sub-standard’ doors with four walnut timber double inspired by the original fire doors.

Kent Taylor, Managing Director for Red Door Ventures commented: “We are delighted that the Old Fire Station has received planning permission.

“With three developments already launched and a further twelve due to start on site in the next year, we are in an extremely strong position for the rest of the year and into 2018. Work is expected to start on site in November with completion next summer.”
