Staff go the extra mile for fundraising

Dozens of care workers went the extra mile to take part in a campaign to provide people in residential care with the best quality of life.

Teams of staff from across Hull based Hica Group, a not for profit organisation which run 19 homes across Hull and East Riding, came together to complete a 10-mile sponsored walk raising a total of around £2,000.

The walkers started in Hessle, continued the walk across the Humber Bridge and the Far Ings Nature Reserve before returning to the Hollies for a celebration party.

The Hica Group, which also runs retirement villages, hosts the annual fundraising walk to top up the organisations Shine Fund, which goes towards items to support residents including; tablet computers, reminiscence pods, sensory areas as well as trips and activities.

The care group supports hundreds of older people, those with dementia and people with learning disabilities. It aims to provide its residents with the best quality of life through well thought out and personalised care programmes. The company recently invested more than £360,000 for two years running to provide customised, individual care and exercise activities, resulting in an improvement in health and wellbeing with its residents.

Participants celebrated completing the walk with a barbeque party, thrown by Hica Group to thank them for their efforts. Suppliers including Apetito, Brakes and Cranwick Country Foods donated a range of refreshments and snacks for throughout the walk and finishing line party.

The Hica Group’s catering and kitchen appliance supplier, Sylvester Keal, also sponsored walkers £500.

Hica Group chief executive, Penni Brown, said: “I am very proud of the staff who are going out of their way to raise money for our Shine Fund, which is an important part of Hica. The fund helps us to provide our residents with enriching activities and ultimately a high quality of life.

Events like this often remind us that there is very much a family mentality within our homes. Our team wants the best for residents, just as they would for their own families and loved ones. This reflects what’s at the heart of our Shine philosophy.“
