Charity receives vital funds to support older people

A charity which supports older people across Northumberland has been given a boost in funds by the UK’s leading housebuilder.

Age UK Northumberland has received £1,000 from Persimmon Homes North East as part of the firms’ Community Champions initiative which awards good causes across the region with financial support.

The independent local charity provides services for older adults throughout Northumberland including free information, advice and advocacy, and the organisation reaches out to an estimated 5,555 lonely older individuals in the county.

Other services provided by Age UK Northumberland include day care and personal care, exercise and fall prevention classes, lunch clubs and day centres.

Vital funds from Persimmon Homes North East will be used to reinforce one of Age UK Northumberland’s key strategic aims, to reduce loneliness of older adults in the area. The charity looks to achieve this through the introduction of a friendship line with a fundraising target of £30,000.

Rachel Todd, Head of Income Generation and Marketing at Age UK Northumberland, said: “We are extremely grateful to Persimmon Homes for this generous funding.

“It will give our campaign a great boost and support ongoing fundraising efforts including hosting a ball at Newton Hall in November and community fundraising from local groups and businesses.”

Debbie Zaben, sales and marketing director for Persimmon Homes North East added: “This charity is a great cause and it’s comforting to know that a huge number of older adults in the area are spared from loneliness thanks to the efforts of Age UK Northumberland.”
