Demolition work begins to pave way for £5m Hexham housing development

Demolition work has begun on the St Cuthbert’s Close sheltered accommodation close to the centre of Hexham, Northumberland.

Landlord Karbon Homes is planning a comprehensive redevelopment of the site, which will see a brand new, £5m development of 38 high specification flats for older residents.

The project has also seen the demolition of two other Karbon Homes properties, a pair of semi-detached houses, which previously sat between St Cuthbert’s Close and Hencotes.

This part of the project will allow the creation of a new entrance for the development on Hencotes – linking the residents into all the facilities available in the town centre, and allowing easy access for visitors.

The existing St Cuthbert’s Close building was built more than 40 years ago and had become outmoded, with bedsit flats which did not meet modern standards.

The Sheltered Housing Older Persons team at Karbon Homes has found that their residents’ aspirations today tend to be for modern one or two bedroomed apartments or bungalows.

Vince Walsh, development and regeneration manager for Karbon Homes, said: “This is an important site, close to the centre of Hexham, and we are aware of our responsibility to redevelop it in an appropriate manner.

“We are working closely with our contractor MGL to ensure the demolition process goes as smoothly as possible and that we minimize disruption for neighbouring properties.”

The new homes on the St Cuthbert’s Close site will form part of Karbon Homes’ regionwide development programme which will see the landlord deliver 2,400 homes over the next four years.
